Band Judge More Pleased

Placings in First A Grade Test NELSON STREETS THRONGED FOR PARADE Per Press Association. NELSON, Last Night. ‘‘As each session goes you bands improve,” said the judge, Mr. Kerry, after hearing seven bands in the first A grade test selection to-night. “Whoa I heard the hymn selection I was beginning to wish I had never come to New Zealand.” He said there had been good playing to-night. His big criticism was the thin cornet playing whieh he could not tolerate. Many players gave the impression that they had just begun on the cornet a fortnight before the contest. He had been particularly impressed by two trombone players and one soprano cornet. The placings were as follow:—Woolston, Wanganui Garrison, Timaru Municipal, St. Kilda Municipal, Queen Alexandra's Own, Palmerston North Garrison, Nelson Garrison. Euphonium Solo. Two large solo classes were judged this morning in the band contest. The judge, Mr. Kerry, said that he could claim to know the set euphonium pioce, as he was a pupil of the composer, and had played it twice a week for six years. He criticised the playing of the cadenza, and said the thing was lacking in introduction and theme, which required warmth of tone and colour. Results were:—V. Williams (Wanganui Garrison) DOpts. 1; H. Cotton (Nelson Garrison) 84pts. 2; J. Smith (Port Nicholson Silver) 82pts. 3. B Flat Cornet Solo. li. Simpson (Woolston Brass) 92, Lloyd Lee (Te Awamutu) 89, J. F. Storrie (Invercargill Civic) 88. Tho judge, Mr. Goodall, said they kept the standard up fairly well but not very high.
