Dannevirke Ewe Fair

RECORD YARDING AND GOOD PRICES. DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 18. Ewes were yarded in record numbers for the annual fair in the Dannevirke saleyards to-day. The great majority of the offerings arrived between dawn and i 0 o'clock this morning, and firstclass organisation enabled all drafts to be penned with neither congestion nor confusion. The total number of ewes offering was estimated at 30,000, compared with the especially big total of 27,500 at the fair last year. Several ewe fairs recently have been notable for the unusually big offerings. For the most part the quality of the ewes at to-day's fair was good. A more extensivo lay-out than in the past was used, including tho whole of the back paddocks, with tho result that the ewes could be viewed more conveniently. An innovation was the placing of notice-boards indicating where the differently aged offerings were located. The Southern Hawke's Bay Auctioneers' Association coped admirably with the record yarding. A start with the selling was made at 11 o’clock and for two hours good prices were realised for good quality pens.
