B Grade Test to Wellington

Hastings Third; Dannevirke Sixth JUDGE PLEASED WITH WINNER'S PERFORMANCE. Per Press Association. NELSON, Last Night. Wellington Tramways won the B grade championship six points ahead of Greymouth Civic. The judge, Mr Kerry, said that considering the difficulty of the selection, the performance of the winning band more than pleased him and he wished heartily to congratulate the conductor for the great detail he got into the selection. He was pleased also with such refinement from a B grade band and pointed out that the piece was selected for an A grade contest in England last September. He suggested that the same number be set for the B grade next contest so that bands could get 12 months’ solid practice. Results were:— Wellington Tramways: First test 118, second test 119. Total, 237. Greymouth Civic: 114, 117, 231. Hastings Citizens: 116, 114, 230. Institute Silver (Wellington): 123, 101, 224. Christchurch Municipal: 110, 102, 212. Dannevirke: 97, 109, 206. Marlborough Mounted: 95, 100, 195. Westport Municipal, 109, 77, 186. Cambridge Municipal: 107, 76, 183. Palmerston North City: 109, 74, 183. Takaka Citizens, 84, 73, 157. Nelson Citizens, 90, 65, 155. The mopt noticeable feature that was wrong in the tenor horn solo in the band contest this morning was tho tempo, said the judge (Mr T. Goodall). The competitors played it like a dirge. The marks awarded were low because so many expression marks were missed. The winner gaVe the best reading throughout, although he was not perfect. The first and second players were the only ones who gave a reasonable and consistent tempo right through. Results:—F. Ormond (Port Nicholson Silver) 89pt». 1, R. Francis (St. Hilda) 88pts. 2, L. Scrivener (Por;t Nicholson Silver) 87pts. 3; nineteen entries. The bass trombone solo was won by L. Williscombe (Dannevirke Municipal) with 88 points. B. Redmond (.St. Joseph Orphanage) was second with 80 points. First and third places in the B flat cornet championship went to Woolston players. Judge Kerry again criticised the thin ton© of tho cornets, aifliough he had hoard some wonderfully artistic performances. Result:—R. Simpson (Woolston Brass) 89pts. 1, Fred Bowes (Timaru Municipal) 81pts. 2, W. Stevenson (Woolston Brass) 78pts. 3; 24 entries.
