Ballance Memorial
ARRANGEMENTS FOR CEREMONY. A well-attended meeting was held in the Ballance hall on Monday evening to arrange for the garden party and dance in connection with the unveiling of the memorial. The memorial is to take the form of a stone which is expected to cost in the vicinity of £SO. It is to be erected in memory of the Hpn. John Ballance, founder of the settlement, and the early pioneers, Mr L. Holdaway explained fully what had been done in collecting funds and choosing a stone. He has now almost £SO in subscriptions and jthb stone would bo erected in the schoolgrounds on February 22. The actual memorial would then be complete except for the addition of a rockery which is to be added later round the foundation. Mr R. McKenzie has promised to superintend the formation oi the rockery. On the motion of Mr li. McKenzie, seconded by Miss Foster, Mr L. Holdaway was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr J. B. Taifc reported having received a very fine enlarged photo cf the late Hou. John Ballance from Mrs J. Hatherly, of Wanganui, and Mr R. McKenzie offered to hang the photo in a prominent position in the school, where it could be viewed by visitors. Mr and Mrs L. Holdaway were appointed to meet visitors and superintend proceedings at the unveiling ceremony: Several sub-committees were appointed to arrange for the garden party to be held on Friday, February 26, in the school grounds, and the dance in the hall in the evening.
