United. —The formei ! were dismissed for 299 (Giorgi 98, | House 59, Waymouth 53, Bligh 26, | Mitchell 22 not out, Kit 14; Dunn three for 16, Briraer three for 103). At stumps United had lost one wicket fot 99 runs (Fowler 22 not out, Swallow 13, Mahoney 19 not out). Bowling Shield to Napier. I There was a good attendance of howlers at the Napier Bowling Club’s ' green on Thursday, the occasion being j the annual match for tho Civil Service ! Shield, held by Hastings. Five rinks 1 were engaged, and in every instance * wins were recorded for the Napier Civil 1 Service. Napier, for the first time, holds the shield. A particularly good save was made by tho Napier Central Fire Brigade, when it received a call at 8.42 p.m. on Thursday evening to a fire in Cameron road, Napier, at a house occupied by a Mr Gregory. The fire, caused by the ignition of some benzine, spread quickjy? .giving off dense clouds of black smoke, but the brigade arrived promptly on the scene and the damage was limited to the burning of a washhouse attached to the building and part of the kitchen. Smoke damaged other parts of the house to a slight extent, but so quickly was the fire extinguished that an hour after, the electric light was still burning in the front part of the house. .Preserving Turangukumu. On Thursday the Nt pier Chamber of Commerce again discussed the preservation of the bush areas at Turangukumu and Runanga.' Advice was received that there was a possibility of the ultimate sale to tho public of part of the former area. Tho advice was contained in a copy of a letter from tho Hon. F. Langstone, Minister in charge of scenerypreservation, to the Hon. W. L. Barnard, M.P. It was decided to send letters of thanks to tho owner of the property, Mr Gardner, for his offer, and to Mr Barnard for his work. Hastings Poultry Fanciers. The Hastings Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Society held its second meeting of the year on Thursday night, ’’lhere was a large attendance. The new ■secretary reviewed tho position of the society and club members expressed their satisfaction. Advice has been re- , seived from the North Island association I chat show dates here would be the same as last year, tho last week in June. At the close of the business Mr G. Thorn- !, ton gave an interesting address on Sil--1 ver and Golden Sealright Bantams, illus- , trated with some young specimens he ' lias had this season.
