Awahuri Road Sewerage Pump
IMPROVEMENT PROPOSED Last evening’s meeting of the Feilduig Borough Council favoured the inolallation of an electric pump to replace t-ho existing sewerage pump machinery on Awahuri Road, but was unable to agree that the work snouid be undertaken during the current financial yoar. Or. V. E. fcknith advocated immediate action because of the complaints about .ho existing service ana was supported jy Cr. P. G. Guy, who paid that the .situation was a threat to the health of the community. The speakers felt that an expenditure of £l6O now on the electric pump would save a greater expenditure later on. The Mayor (Mr. T, L. Seddon) agreed with the necessity for the improvement but could not see how the expenditure could be met out of the current year’s budget. The council was faced with expenditure on account of the increase !in wages and also on account of the emergency precautions scheme, matters over which it had no control, and these expenses would have to bo met. The council could not stand, in addition, a sum of £l6O and ho could' not recom--1 mend the council to vote this amount , when it was not available. He had not had any complaints on the grounds of ! the pump being a menace to health. ! All the complaints had to do with the noise of the mechanism.
After the borough engineer (Mr. T. K. Hay; had given an explanation of the operation of the existing pump, the confirmed Mr. Hay’s opinion thao the pump was fundamentally wrong in the first place. Mr. Seddon agreed that it was the council’s duty to remedy the trouble as soon as possible and he favoured provision for a suitable electric pump on next year’s estimates. The Mayor moved to this effect. Cr. C. B. McClure favoured referring i ho proposition to the finance committee to investigate whether the cost of a new >ump could be met. The Mayor assured the council that .no money could not be found unless £ho council was prepared to run into an overdraft at the end of the financial year. The town clerk. (Mr. C. H. Tafte) said that the council was already faced with £4OO additional expenditure not budgeted for and the money could not be found for the pump. The council divided on the Mayor’s proposition, which was carried.
