THE CHIEF EVENT DESCRIBED TRAVIS AX WORTHY FINISHES WELL (By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Travis Axworthy was a New Zealand Cup candidate a few weeks ago, and though he made a poor showing m that race ho had a big following, which evidently deserted him in the Canterbury Handicap yesterday. Altogether it was a poor race, for Vesuvius tenth fav ourile in a field of eleven, led for the greater part of the journey and set a pace that tied up the majority, but st 11 left a brilliant sprinter like liaws Axworthy with a chance to race nm home. No race could have suited him better. He came along with a burst oi speed at the finish and nothing in the Dominion will beat Travis Axworthy n a two furlong sprint. The time was 4.22, and in going 4 minutes 24 seconds Vesuvius registered a great performance for second place. Great Logan, was always in the picture but failed over the last bit. Lindbergh who lost some ground at the start went a line race only to find his self-imposed penalty 100 great. Tom Thumb in the hands ot an amateur driver failed to go away. Harold Thorpe showed speed. Kmgscraft was boring at all stages ot the race. Grand Light showed neither speed nor brilliance. Erin’s Fortune stood on the mark. Old Logan Chief went Ins usual solid race without ever having a chance.
