FRAUD ALLEGED
ENTERTAINER ARRESTED

NAPIER, This Day. Complaints received by the police regarding an entertainment presented in the Municipal Theatre oil Saturday night led to the arrest of Franklin John Smith, aged 33 years on a charge of false pi'etences. Smith, alias “Pit Pot” Smith, appeared before a Justice of the Peace in the Police Court on the following charge: “That on 3rd January at Napier with intent to defraud he did obtain from William Neilson the sum of 9s by means of a certain false pretence, by falsely representing that he was a master magician known as ‘Carter the Great.’ ”
Further similar charges will be brought against Smith. Detective Sergeant- Eitzgibbon, who prosecuted, applied for a remand until 12th January. This was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £IOO in self, together with two sureties of £SO each.
