NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS BRILLIANT PLAY IN SEML FINALS (By Telegraph—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, 9th January. Brilliant play was seen in this morning’s play when the semi-finals in the North Island tennis championships were reached. The results of play were Men’s singles: N„ R. C. Wilson beat T. ißhodes-Williams 63 715; E. L. Bartleet beat J. C. Charters 6-3, 2-6, 10-8: L. France beat C. B. Webster 6-3, 6-4.
Men’s doubles: Bartleet and E. W. Griffiths beat A. C. Johns and R. B. •Hardy 1-6, 6-1, 6-1; A. K. Turner and V. N. Hubble beat W. J. Melody and R. A. Court 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Ladies’ singles: Miss Jean Ward beat Mrs L. Berg 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ladies’ doubles: Misses Knight and Whitelaw beat Mrs Smith and Miss Ramsay 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; Misses Pownall and Zeisler beat Misses Graham and Kean 6-5, 6-5; Misses Rundle and Taylor beat Misses Todd and Card 6-4. 6-1. Wilson was hi great form against Rhodes-Williams, who put up a great fight, especially in the second set. Bartleet and Charters had a thrilling str iggle. Charters turned on wonderful tennis in the second set, his accuracy giving Bartleet no chance. The final set went to 10-8. Bartleet led 5-2, but Charters fought back, taking the next games. Bartleet struck the top of his form when the game was 8 all and ran out the winner. FURTHER RESULTS NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The North Island lawn tennis championships were continued yesterday in fine weather. Rain late in the afternoon held up play for a while, hut on the whole good progress was made. In the women’s singles semi-final Mrs W. J. Melody beat Miss J. Ward 6-2, 6-4; Miss B. M. Knight beat. Mrs C Smith 6-3, 6-1. In the men’s doubles semi-finals A. C. Stedman and N. R. C. Wilson bent M. L. Lnmpe and J. C. Charters 6-2. 6-1. In the women’s doubles semi-finals Misses Bundle and Taylor beat Miss Pownall and Ziesler 6-3. 6-3: Miss Whitelaw and Knight beat Mrs W. J. Melodv and Miss Macfarlane 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In the combined doubles semi-finals N. R. C. Wilson and Mrs Melody beat F. W Griffiths and Miss B. Griffiths 6-2, 6-0; E. L. Bartlett and Miss Macfarlane heat M. L. I.ampe and Mis C. Smith 6-2, 6-4.
