The ingenious portable piers used for the prefabricated artificial harbours that made the invasion of Normandy possible were hundreds of feet long and had to rise and fall with a 20-foot tide on a flat beach A perplexing engineering problem. Prime Minister Churchill sent operations chiefs a typical note:— “Piers must float up and down with the tide. . . . Let me have the best solution. Don’t argue the matter. The difficulties will argue for themselves.” (Associated Press).
