MUCH SPECULATION
POST OF ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY London, Jan. 1. The delay in announcing the appointment of the new Archbishop of Canterbury has given rise to fresh outbursts of press speculation as to probable appointment. Early press comment considered the appointment of the present Bishop of London. Dr. G. F. Fisher, as extremely likely. With the lapse of time other names have come into the picture and a recent newspaper article mentioned, in addition to the Bishop of London, the Bishop of Chichester, Dr. George Bell, the Bishop of Bristol, Dr. Woodeard. and the Bishop of Winchester, Dr. Mervyn Haigh. It also made the suggestion that the Prime Minister might look outside the ranks of present Bishops or might choose a Bishop from one of the many dioceses of the Anglican Communion overseas. All this is, of course, mere speculation until the appointment is made but it is quoted as evidence of the keen interest of churchmen and of the nation as a whole in the very difficult task of finding a successor to Dr. Temple.
