VIEWS OF MR STIMSON
ENEMY NOT YET PULLING OUT (Rec. 10 a.m.) Washington, Jan. 4. The Secretary of War, Mr H. L. Stinison, stated in Washington on Thursday that despite the early success of the United States counter-offensive the Germans still have enough power to start a new offensive, though probably not comparable with the Ardennes assault. Mr Stimson adedd: “Having made his gamble the enemy# is not yet pulling out. He is not willing to retire from his temporary advantage. He has dug-in at certain points of the Derimeter and maintained enough troops in the centre to make another push possible.” Mr Stimson also declared that despite the speed of the German breakthrough United States losses in tanks were only 6 per cent, heavier than th** normal monthly attrition rate. A total of 22.340 German prisoners had been captured between December 16 and 31. No accurate account of United States losses and casualties had yet been received.
