DUKE OF EDINBURGH THEATRE.
YEBTEEDAY evening witnessed tho first appsiirance of the justly celebrated tragedian, Mr. Talbot. The play ehoson for tho ocu.;sion was " Hamlet," and as regards Mr. Talbot's conception and reading of thu part of the Royal Dane there can be but one opinion —it was excellent. Vve hud been led tu believe that Mr. Talbot's defects were- his Scotch accent and a disposition to rant Neither of those was noticeable last nitrht in the -lightest decree. From first to luet the put of" Hamlet" was evenly plajed throughout, a<-d in the soliloquies he was at time-, sub-iinn.-. Without going into any lengthened criticism, which the space at our command on thu present occasion will not permit, we may rwmrk that many of the original renderings of thu text an"! stage business, introductions which we do not romember to hive seen before, g'.vu evidence of careful study and int> j lli"ericu oi the highest order. Mr. Talbot possess 1 )* a good stag.-, figure, a powerful voico capable •■! much modulation, a mobility of foaliuo, and a grace of action which aro powerful adjuncts tohia wonderful elocutionary powers. il-j win admirably supported by Mudarno ]>ur.t at the Queen, and the other members of thcomply- Wo regret that we cannot further enlarge in our present issue on "the excoll.ir.ce.s of Mr. Talbot and the dramatic company o; the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre. Wo "cardial!} bid him welcome to Auckland, and anticipate much pleasure in witnessing the ronnd of legitimate characters which ho anounces for representation.
