Phesiden'T —The Right Rev. the Bishop < Auckland. Yice-Pkksidents —His Honor the Superii tendent; the Be v. J. T. W. Davies, 31. A. Teeasurf.r —G. W. Owen, Esq. mllE Committee appointed to take stej I to rescue neglected children in Aucklan make the following statement and appeal f< funds. From an enquiry ordered by His Honor tl: Superintendent, at. the request of the Cou mittce, information was obtained of sou fifty boys and girls in tho city, a largo mi jority of whom nr-j without parental eontr and "care, one or other parent being cithi dead or in gaol, or having deserted the otFspring. These are living, in many case with persons whose lives present the worst < possible examples to them. Tho Committeo have unanimously agree that nothing short of removing the childre from the streets, and from their present res deuces, will be an effective remedy for tli evil. An Act of the Legislature gives tb necessary power to do this. The Committee therefore recommend thn two Industrial Schools should be establishe under the Act, one for girls and one for boy: and that both, if possible, should be in th suburbs of Auckland: that the childre should be trained in industrial occupations the girls in those of the household, the boys i those of the garden or the farm, and tha they should in due time b« placed out in th families of country settlers, bo as to be entirel removed from the companions and influence which new surround them. Tho cost of maintaining two such institu tions -will b» considerable, and the Proving Government can afford no assistance befor tho Council meet 3. In the meantime th Committee propose to make a commencemen on a small scale with girls. A suitable build ing for temporary use has been promised, am the sum required for the first year's expendi ture, for repairs, furnishing, maintenance, &c, is about £350. Tho Committee urgent!; appeal for funds to commence the good wor of rescuing at once some littlo girls from th life of sin and shame iu which they are nov being reared; and, as the whole questioi resolves itself into this, it remains to be seei whether the pubh'c spirit of Auckland is equa to tho occasion of providing tho modest sun required, and whether one of the most human and benevolent objects which can appeal ti our sympathies, shall receive the support o tho community. Subscriptions and donation will be thankfully received by tho Treasure and Secretaries, aud collectors will b authorised to seek assistance by a houfe t' house visitation. P. H. CORN FORD,) Hon. E. GLANYILLE, J Secretaries Auckland, JuneJ 13,1870.
