COMMERCIAL
Nbw Zealand Herald Office. Saturday evening. Tho early portion of the p<*st month business was pretty active, principally owing to tho demand for Christmas commodities, but tue wholesale trade has been slow during the last fortnight; in fnct, business has been stagnant owing to tho holidays. At present the sharebrokors' oflicos are closed, so there ure no transactions to record. Prior to Christmas, sterling stocks—such as bank and insurance shares —were in favour, and firmly held. Mining sharc'3 wore slow, thore being little doing in any of them. At Te Aroha no fresh discoveries of importance have been made, but several nice reefs have been opened, nearly all showing gold, and aome iiro roughly estimated to be payable. Business is generally considered satisfactory, bills being promptly met. Money is very plentiful for investment at 7 to 9 per cent, according to the security offered. Kauri gum has cember, about GSO tons, oeing almost unprecedented. The recoipts since last mail are about SSO tons. Sum ran up as high as 41s. and even tonchod 4'in for ordinary, but within the last fortnight it is copst-.ieiably easier, two or three small parcels having been sold an low as 35s to 38d. The only reason assigned for the drop is that the principal buyers had not storage spice available, aud did not euro to engage other spaco at the prices ruling. Still very little has lately come in for sale, nearly all being a consignment, and tho markers so sens!tire that but slight action on the part of purchasers would render it as firn; as ever. The btinantine Oceola is expected to sail for New York about a week hence, bearing 220 tons net. The ship Wanganui, which leaves for London about tho 10th inst., takes above 350, perhaps 400, tons. Several schooners have arrived from the Islands within the past week, each having a quantity of copra, and aggregating to nearly 300 tons. Flax is being delivered pretty froely at £19 to £22 for 6rst-cl:is 3 quality. Cement is overstocked, GOO casks of Knight Bevan's brand having been sold at auction at only 143 on board ship. Ales and porter are slow, there being the usual demand for consumption ; and the same holds good of wines and spirits. Brandiee are firm, but the stock of bulk is very heavy. Flour rules low, as do maize and oats, the demand for the litter two commodities being very much diminished at this season, nwing to tho pleatifulness of green feed. Ironmongery is steady, but without marked improvement, and prices rule low. English malt cannot be sold for more than Gs or 7.-*, and is not in favour even afc those prices. There is not much doing in hops. New Kents are quoted at 2s Gd; Nelson, 2s ; and Tasmanian, la 10J to 2s. Hobart Town jams are bocoming scarce, and are almost out of wholesale bands. Holders will not sell at lass than 8$ 6d, and the tendency is upward. Sardines are advancing, but the consumption decreases proportionately. There is little or no sale for American bacon and hams. Blasting powder is almost unsaleable. Twenty-five tons WestallV salt realised at auction, fine, JSt; coarse, £3 13s 6d. As business is almost at a standstill, owing to the holidays, there is very little worthy of note. The Pacific mail stoamer Australia arrived on the 13th ultimo, boiriug London advices up to November 4th.

AUCKLAND STOCK i.ND SlhAIiE M \RKET. The month's business lias been rather limited, the usual Christmas holidays interfering somewhat with show a further advance, which is likely to be maintained with the present cheap money market. Bank of New Zealand shares are in demand at £21, and most of our local stocks are held, the holders Undine it difficult to improve on present investments. There has been a very limited market for golrimininir shares The new goldlicld (Te Aroha) lias yet to be proved tbtStntralimprcssion being that it will be a p.ivablo goldlield with comparatively low srrade dirt.
