Some little excitement has been caused by a reported case of smallpox. A man named Barker, lately arrived from Tasmania, was found suffering from disease, and the doctors are at variance whether it is veritable smallpox or chicken-pox. Meanwhile the patient is isolated at the sanatorium, and his effects have been burned.
Great preparations are being made for the exhibition of rowing by Hanlan on Albert Park Lake next Saturday. An Austrian named Suttora, who was being conveyed from Adelaide to Sydney to answer a charge of murder, seize.d a moment when the constable's attention was diverted to jump overboard. Boats were lowered, but the crew were unable to find the man.
At the inaugural meeting of the Melbourne University Union, held at Sydney, Bishop Barry excited the ire of the total abstainers by expressing the opinion that a moderate use of stimulants was allowable.
The application for the release of the lunatic Cresswell from Parramatta Asylum, on the ground that he is Arthur Orton, was again adjourned. Efforts are being made to accord a fitting reception to Archbishop Moran on his arrival.
