(BY TELEGRAPH.) (FEU PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. November 12. The recent rains have greatly increased the volume of water in the Rangitikei and Wangaehu rivers, which are running bank high. Some damage has been dono to the temporary bridge over the Rangitikei, and io is not deemed advisable to send trains across it. Passengers are being trollied across. About six weeks ago some wreckage, on one piece of which was the word" Philadelphia" in zinc letters, was washed aßhoro at Orepuki, Foveaux Ktrait. The Marine Department have now been informed thati three large spars have been found in a bay on Stewart's Island. The wreckage was found at both places, and leads to the belief that some disaster has befallen an American vessel. The remainder of tho additions to tho Parliamentary Buildings are to bo completed by contract, if the tenders raceivod are considered reasonable. Novemoer 13. It is not likely that the report with reference to the liquidation of the Guthrie Companies will be made public until several days after the return of Mr Justico Pennefather to Dunedin. The report has nob yot) been received by all the parties. The Compensation Court, consisting of the Chief Justico (as president), and Messrs J. C. M'Kerrow and Horace Baker (as assessors) deliberated in camera on Friday and Saturday, with a view of determining the compensation to be paid to the owners of the Hatuma Estate, which had been taken by Government under the Laud for Settlements Act. At five o'clock on sa' urday afternoon the Court informed counsel engaged in the case that it had been unable to come to an agreement as to the amount of compensation to be awarded, and it had in consequence dissolved. It is an open secret that the assessors were widely apart in their estimate of the sum to which the owners of the estate were entitled.

It is understood that the various country volunteer corps have already had their positions allotted to them in the case of an outbreak of war. A council of war was held by the officers of the corps engaged in tho review at Marton on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, when it was stated that special trains had been arranged to carry volunteers along the coast to Wellington, if necessary. November 14. Mr Wra. Watson, ex-President, and Mr Martin kennedy have been nominated by tho shareholders to the directorate of tho Bank of New Zealand. A fire broke out at 2 a.m. in Catlin'a steam laundry, Cumberland street, which, was completely destroyed. Thero is no c'ue to ihe origin. The place was insured in the Standard office for L 550. The weather continues unseasonable and wet. The Alpine dredge has resumed operations near Cromwell, after an overhaul, and is again on good gold, the return for 13 shift 3 beitg 520z of gold. The Golden Beach return is 350z 9dwt 12gr; Otago dredge, 430z ; Clyde dredge, 22on—all for ft week.

CHRISTCHtfRCH. November 13. The weather, which has been fine for tho carnival week, underwent a decided change on Friday night, and heavy rain fell all Saturday, clearing up about midday on Sunday. The lake train for Dunedin and the boats for Wellington on Saturday tight took a large number of returning excursionists, including many spielers and undesirable characters, who have been reaping a harvest here duriDg ihe holidays. Christchurch lias been fuller than in any previous Bhow week. The pedigree stock sales held in connection with the show took place on Saturday. No more animals sold than usual. Only moderate prices were obtained, except for Mr Uean's shorthorn bull Russell's Florist 11., which was bought by Mr R. D. M'Lean, Napier, for 100 guineas. Ihe Governor and suite returned to Wellington last night. November 14. On Saturday afternoon Mary Mallerza, a widow, 67 years of age, residing at Linwood, was found dead in one of the rooms of her cottage. It is surmised that deceased had a fit and fell on tho floor. Some 1800 visitors left for their homes by train and steamer on Saturday evoning. It rained continuously for 46 hours from Saturday morning. Reports from the country say that the rain waa very acceptable, and that the crops have benefited immensely. The rivcra are full, and in sorao places the creeks have overflowed, but no damage is reportod. At the annual pedigree stock sale on Saturday the entry was not very large. Prices were very moderate, tho exception being that 100 guineas were obtained by Mr Deans for the shorthorn bull Russell's Florist. Much stock was sold privately, to be sent to the Worth Island.

AUCKLAND. November 12. The .Auckland Agricultuial Show has been very largely attended. The weather waa fine.

At the Coromandel Police Court Frederick William Bez*r, ex-constable, was charged, first, with obtaining LI 10a by false pretences from John Hand, liotelkeeper, and, Becond, with obtaining LI 12s by false pretences from James Rolleston. Accused pleaded guilty. The Bench fined accused LlO, or cue month's imprisonment, on each charge, giving him one week to pay the fine, a local resident going bond. Hand and Rolleston were reimbursed. Hamilton Scott, aged 16, two months out from London, staying with hiß cousin, Mr Smith, grocery merchant in Commerce street, and attending school, committed suicide by jumping from the cemetery bridge at 9 o'clock last night. He left letters bidding good-bye. He had a horror of the prospect of working, and said ho would shoot himself sooner than brush his boots. He fell 90 feet, and died in a few minutes. Mr Dorreen, grocer, Karangahape Road, had his premises burglarised last night, and L 7 worth of tobacco stolen. November 14. The New Zealand and. River Plate Attorneys are advised by cable from London that the Court has sanctioned the cancellation of the uncalled capital of L 4 per share. Dr Ginders, late medical superintendent at Roto:ua sanatorium, is dead.

PALMERSTON NORTH. November 14. The weather is now improved and the prospects for the show are good; The entries received total 1981, being considerably in excess of those of last year. The town is fast filling with visitors and a successful week is anticipated.
