A remarkable scene occnrred on September 6 (says a New York message), when 15 dying Ronghriders, who were wounded at Santiago, arrived by special hospital train from Montank. The train stopped at the town of Qaoque, a fashionable seaside resort, to get fresh water. The daughter of the mayor, accompanied by several other girls, boarded the train. The mayor's daughter kissed each of the men, and gave a bouquet of flowers as well. This courtesy had a marked effect on the men, and physicians state that they were perceptibly brighter afterwards. At a late meeting of the Westham, Sussex, School Board a motion was down for the exclusion of the Press because of sensational headings, but as it was stated that the reports were accurate the matter Tras allowed to drop.

An amazing story was told before the county magistrates at Colchester, on September S, by the wife of l)r John Edward Havens, lord of the manor of East Dony!and. The complainant, the daughter of an official in the Qaeen's household, has been married to Dr Havens for soms years. She deposed that for a period of six years he has ill-treated her persistently on the ground that she had touched him for evil, cast an evil eye on the people of the village where they lived, and had bewitched their eldest girl by putting powder, made from ancient relics, on the stairs. He had incited his daughter to slap her mother's face ; had himself b ackened his wife's eyes, pull-d out he? hair, and beaten her on the arms and shoulders, besides flourishing a revolver and threatening to " shoot her like a convict" if she left him. He kept her shut up in her bedroom , for months at a time, and did not allow her to see or communicate with friends She only managed to escape by claiming the protection of two policemen who happened to pass the house. The husband pleaded " Not guilty," but made no defence, and the magistrates made a separation order requiring him to allow his wife LSO a year. Mrs Havens was given the custody of the youngest child.
