Waimate A. and P. Show.
(ffROM OUB OWN COBBESPONDKNT.
The Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual show was held in their show ground on the Gorge Road on Tuesday. The weather was fine, although a little cold, and the vehicles constantly arriving from the country districts with their qnota of visitors, together with those brought in by the morning trains from the north and soath, lent an unusually lively appearance to the town, which continued up till noon, when the crowd deserted the streets for the show ground. The entries were much the same as last year, although the horses have fallen off from 106 to 73, and there is a notable increase in implements, from 42 to 83. There is also an increase in sheep, sundries, and dairy produce, while cattle, pigs, sheep, and dogs have fallen off, leaving the total number of entries this year at 263, as against 249 In 1897. Side-shows consisted of a phonograph and several cheap jacks. The first stand was occupied by Messrs Gainnesa and Le Cren, with grain and farm seeds. Messrs Priest and Holdgate had a large exhibit of M'Cormick binders, drills, and other instruments, which found a great number of admirers, The Canterbury Farmers' Association had farm seeds, oats, wheat and manure on exhibition. On Reid and Gray's stand were to be seen the champion plough, disc harrows, Daering harvesters, and pony reaper and binder. The Massey-Harris Company had a good display of binders, Brantford mowers, Jubilee ploughs and bicycles. Booth M'Donald had D F plough, wool press, windmill and hillside plough, the wool press coming in for a great deal of praise. Walter A. Wood and Company also made a good show of different implements. Of the local exhibitors Mr J. M'Taggarb had ploughs, grubbers and harrows of his own make ; Wills Bros, had bicycles, gigs, harrows and implements ; Mr J. Reid, of St. Andrews, showed machine-made harrows ; Messrs Dash and Son exhibited bicycles, gigs, etc. The publican's booth was in the hands of Mr S. Binney and Mr Miller had the confectionery stall. Several side shows were on the ground but did not appear to be doing much business. The Waimate Band was on the ground and played selections at intervals, which greatly added to the afternoon's enjoyment. The officials all worked well to make the show a success, especially the secretary, Mr Taaffe. The chief features of the show were the jumping contests and the pony trots, which caused a great deal of excitement. The following are the awards for prizes in the different classes :
