WELLINGTON. November 18,

The Government have decided bo adopt a number of suggestions made by Commissioner Tanbridge and the Commission for the improvement of the police force and they will come into being as soon as the necessary preparations can be made. Four sub-Inspectors will be appointed at the chief centres and the office of sergeant, major will be allowed to die ont. The present classes In all ranks will be abolr Ished and a system of increments for length of service substituted on the lines laid down In the official report. Lodging allowance will be given to married men unprovided with quarterswho have been over three years in the service. Clerks and acting-detectives will get a shilling a day extra and men who nse their own bicycles with advantage to the service will receive an allowance. A training depot will be established at Wellington and recruits will be taken from all ranks of the community, but the maximum age will be reduced from 40 to 30.

Douglas Mickle, who pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of goods from his employers, was admitted to four years probation and is to pay costs, Lls 15s. Mr J. T. Ihe procession marched to the recreation ground, where the Mayor welcomed bis Excellency with an address from the "townspeople, and another from the Maories. The Governor regretted that he was not accompanied by Lady Ranfurly. He was heartily cheered by a large crowd, and afterwards entertained at luncheon. INVERCARGILL. November 18. Frederick Woodbury, a police constable, was charged at the Police Oourt to-day with assaulting a young woman with intent. The girl was going home between eight and nine at night and al'eges that Woodbury caught her by the arm and forced her along a lonely street and threw her down, when he was surprised by two men and Woodbury ran off. Two witnesses for the prosecution, however, stated that the girl and Woodbury walked along in a friendly way, sat down under a tree, and engaged in conversation. The case is not concluded. PALMERSTON NORTH. November 17. i At the Manawatu show on the second day Mr Donnelly's successful horse The Master asain carried of the heavy-weight hacks. Brooklyn, ridden by Miss Vennell, took first in the ladies' hack classes. Mr R. D. M'Laan followed up yesterday's success in draughts by taking first for pair of plough horses, three plough horses, and three binder horses. Ladies' leaping and hunters, Mrs Riddifords' Hardaway. The following are the winners in the points prizes. Thoroughbreds, Mr C. Fraser; Shorthorn, Messrs M'Hardy Bros. ; Linoolns, Hon. J. D. Ormond ; Romney, Mr W. B. Allen ; most points in fat cattle, Messrs M'Hardy; fat sheep, Messrs M'Hardy; fat sheep, Messrs Thompson Bros. ; dairy cattle, Mr S. Y. Burridge. The attendance to-day was about 15,000. The Governor and Premier were present. The Show was spoilt by rain, which came down in the afternoon in heavy showers.
