W'hffn. so many cases of wounded have -been reported, together with tlie names of ten New Zealand officers who have .given).their, lives for their country, .t is reasonable to assume that we mustbe -prepared to expect a list or noncommissioned officers and men who have fallen gnllantlv in the lighting. This list is not to hand at the time of wiring, and many inquiries have been made to the authorities by anxious relative-. The probable causes -of delay were explained to your eoi respondent hv the M leister of Defence (Hon. Jas. Allen) to-night). ''Considerable difficulties exist in getting messages through from tho Dardanelles."' .said the Minister. "1 know of ho- method excepting wireless, and the" warships themselves mav be so much -occupied in the operations that iliey have" net had time to .vend wireless messages. Of course the particulars of wounded are much move likely to be -sentthrough early, because they are immediately picked up and put aboard "the hospital' ship. Tims one caii' get a r-c-sord of them. But the killed will' nmbably be buried on the field, and -it takes some time to get their names and: records. It- must -also be remembered that these, men are fighting for their foothold in the country. Fighting is their first object to hold t-htvr nosition and entrench themselves. Thus we h:ire had to he patient. It U obvious that the greatest care must be taken in sending through list? of killed, otherwise mistakes would cause heartburning* when there need be none."'
