Per Pkess Association. Auckland, May 5. As a sequel to the lift accident which caused, the death of Marjory Dpwes on March" 27, the National. Bank of New Zealand; as owners of the Hobson Buildings were charged with that they left the "lift in charge of a person under 18 years of age, viz., a boy of 16 year, and no others.' The defendants pleaded guilty. --.-■ ■ Tho Magistrate expressed the opinion that the bank was in an- unfortunate position. He thought- that Turnbull and Jones, .the firm of contractors for maintaining the lift, were more responsible. ■'■ It -was explained- that they couxt not bo brought within- the Act. The Magistrate imposed a minimum fine o£ ; £5, with costs, as the bank knew nothing of .the matter, except so far as the Act-made the owners technically responsible.
