The second dav of the Waitaki Collie Dog Club's Trials was favored with a. continuance of perfect weather. Vers low persons turned out at starting time, not doubt owing to their late \ot pleasurable hours, at the h;:ll the night before, which is generally acknow- 1 ledged: as. the best turn-out ol Haita and Kurow folk for some years lhe officials had things going punctually at 8 o'clock however, and by 10 a.m. a fair number of enthusiasts had gathered. The yarding exhibition event drew people from far and near, and dust raised by fleeting cars was! discernible on every road leading to 11 ak ; >, from both sides of the river. A .light breeze sprang up in the morning and: continued through the afternoon, and the ideal weather conditions attracted a considerable crowd, largely sprinkled with ladies, behind which conveyances of everv description were in profusion. The Hiintaway Class was suspended for an hour or so to permit oi the Raiding exhibition, but was resumed and completed by -1.30 p.m. The huntawa> course was a sonvrwhat tricky one, as the dogs were required to huiit the sheep between nair> ot flags, one a hundred yards or so up the hill and another a. similar distance above, with a third pair at right angles and higher up on the opposite side "! a gully to the right of the course. The foot of the spur, where it joined the flat, was j broken, up by old slips at one side, and unless the sheep were made to take the right track at the start- the dogs wasted a. considerable time gett ng them back on the course. Once I airly launched on. the spur a good slew at the right moment was all that was needed to ensure success, provided the dog worked with any sense and restraint at all, but the slewing point was taken too Low bv the majority', and dogs got into trouble in consequence, though some apparenlty hopeless messes were retrieved in. the last lap. The final flags were placed on the ridg§, of a spur, and several dogs intent on'g'ving their sheep a good offing vanished from their owner?, ken for a moment or two which put them bevond all chance of winning the President.s prize of £2 2s. for the dog returning quickest after completing the course in class 2. which was won hv Air F. Dow's Rock, who returned in' the very rapid, time of 1 inin. 46 sees, over the half mile course. HUXT-AWAY AND SLEW; about ' about quarter-mile, between three sets flags, about two chains apart.
