The 'news : that the great Atlantic liner Lusitania has been torpedoed off the Irish, coast recalls the fact that the. sailing of the steamer from _New York was attended by something in the nature of an hysterical scene,. We were told by cable that fifty anonymous telegrams' were received by wealthy Americans who were ori board, warning them: -that tho liner would be tornedoed. Relatives of passengers begged them to abandon the voyage, while the word was passed round by foreigners that death accompanied the steamer, and a panic was created. The prophecy of evil has'been, fulfilled in part at least.
A statement as to the significance of the term "seriously wounded" was made on Tuesday evening b'v Dr Makgill, District Health Officer'for Auckland. "I think it would be a comfort to some of those -people who have friends'.at the front,"_ ho said, "if it is explained that 'seriously wounded dees not necessarily mean a dangerous wound." Dr "Makgill "illustrated his points by referring to his own experi-' enco in the South African war. He stated that dn one occasion a man was hit- by a bullet that passed clean through the fleshy part of his shoulder. A doctor classed it- as "slightly wounded," and got into trouble for not setting it down as "seriously wounded." The mere- fact that the bullet penetrated the man's body necessitated classification as "seriously wounded," -arid no consideration was given to the que.stion as to whether the bullet had inflicted serious injuries.
