HAYAYARD'S PICTURES

The star feature of the new series shown for the first time at the Picture Palace, last evening \va« "The BestMan." This is a quickly-mormg drama, concerning the stealing of an important secret cypher message and the marraige of a- young lady to an unknown man. who resembles, by the aid or a disguise, the man she intended to marrv. The bridegroom and bride arc pursued, and in « sleeping com- - pnrtinent the bridegroom recognises a detective. He awakens lis bride and ■ thev decamo. The man she intended to mai-rv arrives later, and is looked upon | as an imnostor. The end is convincing, clover and most eninyable. "The Lure of the Green Table" is another good number. This nlay has a surprising furVh The storv shows the evils ot gambling in. clubs. A young man en-"o-aaed- to be-married not only loses all hi<T money, but also the deeds of the homestead; the voting lady unexpectedly arrives-. Not knowing who the ladyis he -rambles to see who will meet and entertain her. He loses, and the other man meets Ids fiancee. Here iw where the surprise hits vou. "Russia's Great Haul" is a film conveying some ideaof the enormous successes achieved by tli" Russian armv. Thousands ot Austrian nri-oners * are ' marched under o-ua'-d to the orison camn. while here and- there the"German helmet is conspicuous. Towards the end ot this procession we see the Russian droshky utilised in conveying wounded officers ot tli° German and Austrian army into captivity, closely followed by the Rusci<ii* Cos=ack on fe sturdy pony. The 'other vubiects are well up to the usual hiidi standard, -and all are well accompanied bv musical selections, suppliedby Mr Dorward.
