FIERCE REPRISALS.

The Tagliche Rundschau and the Hamburger Nachrichten. take much the same view, and the latter demands fierce reprisals before any question of peace is discussed : "Not a tooth for # tooth, but a dozen teeth for one —let "that be our motto. By magnanimity or by moral force there is nothing for us to gain. Germans are being tortured in tin, enemy's country, and there remains therefore no alternative but that the German Empire make it known throughout the earth that we shall requite tenfold the miseries inflicted on our. people on -the English, French, and Russian prisoners who are in our power." It is, of course wholly untrue that. German prisoners are being treated badly in England: the grievance is that they are being too well treated. But if the German papers confined themselves to facts the German. Government would have no use for them. BAKERS WHO ROB THE POOR. The -nroblem of the hour in Hamburg appears to be the baker, who, when he is not extorting colossal prices from .lr's poorer customers, is, according to the Hamburger Nachrichten, selling the product of his industry to the rich ;in .wholesale quantities: — "The crving evil at present is this: that the 'baker, being supplied only with a fixed! quantity of flour and being certain of .selli'ng bread, whatever happens, is naturally tempted to run np his charges to the extreme limit of the maximum orice allowed by the authorities. On"occasions outrageous prices are demanded. The money is paid amid the sighs of the purchaser, because people are. only too glad to receive any bread' at all, at whatever price they are compelled' to pay. This scandal must be rendered by drastic official measures, and a. sto» n'mst also be put to the practice of certain bakers who sell out their stock privately to select customers.

From the Berliner Tageblatt: "There arc among us superfieiially-mind'ed' persons who.' in their haste to- end' the war, inveigh against the Government as though, like a drunken waiter sweeping with one hand the coffeeroom tables clear of glasses, pot?, and whatnot, they could remove as bv magic every obstacle in the path of final victory.
