The criminal sessions have opened. There were nigh: charges against eight men. Mr Justice Donnistc.n, in his charge, remarked ihat the calendar was light, and there wero Is w ca-es nl' a really serious character.
Edward Robert Wilson, aged 17 years, was admitted to probation lor a year on two charges of theft from Springfield Post (j'ffieo, where he was relieving. Coeil Farrow, aged 20 years, appeared for sentence on a charge ol embezzling .CGO3 from the l.y Helton Borough Council, for which lie Mas cashier. It; was stat.d that the nior.ey was spent mi card-playing and horse-racing. Counsel said that Harrow enlisted in the artillery in order to y;o to the war, when he was arrested. The authorities were prepared to take him if restitution we;-..-made. His Honor considered that the special circumstances warranted giving the. .mail a chance to serve his country, ami postponed sentence for a fortnight. I-lietor MT.can, for breaking and entering and theft, was sentenced to tiv-e years' imprisonment with hard lahor. The prisoner recently came from Australia. -A certificate of probation from the Pentridgc Gaol, Victoria, was found on him. His record showed nine convictions. He was released in Melbourne in March, and arrived in AYellington on April 2.. He came to Cliristchnrch on April 24, and committed the offence on the following day. Emanuel Kirdy, a foreigner, came up for sentence on a charge of incest. His Honor said he had no sympathy with, the prisoner, as he had habitually committed incest with a 15-year-old child. He would be sentenced to 10 vears' imprisonment. Wellington, May 10.
At the .Supreme Court May Wills was convicted of the theft of L'2s from a Chinaman. Sentence was deferred. John Johnston, found guilty ol assaulting a. soldier so as to cause bodily harm, was also remanded for .sentence.
