ANGLING.
The silver medal presented to the Otago Anglers' Association by Mr C. Hale was fished off on Wednesday last, competitors having the choice of the Leith, Waitati, or Shag. Five entered. Mr R. A. Johnston, who elected to fish the Waitati, takes the medal with 53 fish weighing 141b; Mr W. Aitken killed six fish, 121b lloz, heaviest fish 41b soz; and Mr John Ogg, 11 fish, 111b 9oz, heaviest fish 21b. Both these gentlemen fished the Shag river. The other two competitors failed to send in returns. The Waipahi is now in fine fishing condition, aud Mr W. Carltoa is having splendid sport On Tuesday he killed three fish, 101b; Wednesday, two fish, 51b; and ou. Thursday, sis fish weighing 201b.
The Otago Acclimatisation Society has liberated 20,000 young saimon in the Jacob's river. This makes 80,000 out of the 100,000 that are to be liberated in this river.
Tho Southland rivers seem to be giving good sport to anglers. Mr John Davidson killed on the sth in the Otamete 10 fish weighing 19Mb, and on the 7th sis fish, 201b. Mr D. Mills also landed seven very fine fish from this river on the same day.
It is reported in Clinton that local anglers are catching some very heavy fish in the lower waters of the Waiwera.
A party of Dunedin gentlemen fished the Molyneux on the 9th November for the whole day, but came back with their creels in a very empty condition, the cold south west wind that was blowing all day having put the fish entirely off the feed.
Apparently some large fish have been taken out of the Clutha river this year (says the Leader). On Thursday last week Messrs William and John Willocks took 12 fish averaging 41b weight each. These were all taken in the space of two hours. They wont to the same ground on Saturday with the expectation of obtaining a large haul, but only got four fish. One of these weighed 81b loz. On Wednesday eveniug the Rev. Mr Dodd caught four fish, weighing in all 151b. The heaviest fish weighed 51b.
The first competition—fly only—for the season of the Clutha Angling Club took place on Wednesday last. The prizes were: lst.fishing rod (gift of Mr J.Wilkie, Dunedin); 2nd, fishing tackle, value 10s. The following were the results:—J. Telford, Waiwera, 9 fish (weight, 211b 12£oz) ; Peter Mason, Puerua, 7 fish (weight, 151b 12oz); A. Nicol, Owake, 3 fish (weight, 81b 4oz); A.
