THE GEORGE CROSS

AWARD HANDED TO MALTA RUGBY, Sept. 13. At a ceremony m Palace Square, Valetta, Lord Gort to-day handed the Chief justice of Malta the George Cross awarded to the island by tne King in recognition of the gallant service the people of Malta have rendered in the fight for freedom. Lord Gort said that what Malta had withstood in the past, Malta was determined to endure until the day the second siege was lifted. Meanwhile Malta stood firm, undaunted, and undismayed awaiting the time she could call: “Pass friend, all’s well in the island fortress.” The cross will be exhibited in every town and village, and after the war it will be placed in St. John's Procathedral, which has so far not been damaged.
