THE RAILWAY JUNCTION.

, Our Wellington correspondent yesterday* supplied tlie information that the vexed subject as to whether the railway junction was to be at Makaraka or Makauri had been finally decided m. favor of the latter site, at King's road, the place originally chosen. We assume that the arguments and facts adduced m regard to eitlier site were given due weight by the engineering 1 authorities, and that the one was finally adopted, not because it had been confidently set forth m the first place, but because after mature consideration and reviewing the facts supplied regarding local conditions, the weight of engineering opinion still confirmed the wisdom of adopting the King's road site. Matters having reached that stage we take it .that the suipporters of either site will now unite m urging that the work be pushed on with all possible expedition. While the protests made still remained to be dealt it would have been unwise to have thrown great energy into the project, as to have done so would have been deemed an affront to those who had m all, earnestness raised objections that could only be disposed of by a decision based on engineering authority after taking the points raised into account. Even that judgment will probably not be convincing to some who have held the contrary view, but we have no doubt that it will be accepted as final, .and that tlie desire now, will be to see the world accelerated, arid Patutahi brought within range of the "iron horse" with all/expedition. As with the existing line, it is probable 'that every stage reached will be self-sustaining, showing a; profit on working expenses, and providing facilities that will be fully availed 1 of and much appreciated by the settlers.
