OPENING OF SEASON GEtfERALLY GOOD BAGS REPORTED FROM ALL AREAS FISH IN GOOD CONDITION The first of the fortnightly reports submitted by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean) upon angling conditions in the distriet is as follows. — • Rotorua Area W/eather conditions were rough throughout the greater part of the period. Northerly winds accompariied by heavy rains prevailed which. is rather unusual at this time of year. Nevertheless large numbers of anglers were out and in mos't cases good catches were reported. •The Utuhina and Ngongotaha streams were well patronised -and limit bags taken on the fly were fairly common. Trolling parties did well on Rotoiti, Tarawera and Rotorua. The best cateh reported during the fortnight was taken at Okataina and consisted of 23 fish average 6Jlbs, largest 131bs. This bag was taken by Messrs Morrison and Gleeson, of Rotorua who were fly fishing. One party of three rods fly fishing at the top end of the Ohau Channel accounted for 62 fish during 21 days. The general condition of the fish ranges from good to fair according to localities.
Details of catches are: — • Major Oliver, Messrs Gomez and Leary, 58fish, 21hs average, Rotoehu; Capt. Stanier and friend, 25, 3|lbs, Tarawera; Mr. Ahbott, Auckland, and Capt. Bay of Plenty Area The rivers in the Bay of Plenty were in good order for the opening but after the first few days became discoloured which made fish rather difficult. The new fly area on the Waimana has proved popular with fishermen. On the opening day 14 anglers fished there, averaging 7 fish each. Details of catches are as under: — J. Morice, 27 fish, 21bs average, Waimana; C. A. Tims, 15 fish, 2|lbs, Tarawera; F. H. Lord 13fish, 211hs, Waimana; A. F. Dickinson (Opotiki) 10 fish, 2!lbs, Waimana; C. A. Those who did venture out were rewarded with only fair success. The largest fish reported was taken at Wjaikareiti and weighed 7lbs. Mr. and Mrs. Berry landed 110 fish during 10 days fishing in the vicinity of Lake House. This catch averaged 21 lbs and w,as taken on the fiy and by trolling. Taupo Distriet The launch parties did well both trolling and fly fishing particularly in the vicini'ty of Whangamata and Whakaipo Bays. Parties fly fishing from dinghies near the Waikato outlet had good sport and some very nice specimens between 6 and 81bs were taken. Very few anglers fished at the 3 and 4 Mile Bays but fish up to 811bs were taken there on the fly. The Wjaikato above the Huka Falls fished well and numerous good bags were taken both on the fly (wet and dry). The fish here were in good condition but were mostly darker in colour than is, usual at this time of year. So f,ar, the general condition of the fish taken at the Taupo end of the lake is somewhat better .than those caught at the southern end. Details are as follows: — Launch "Tainui" Power and party (5) from New Plymouth, 148 fish, 41 lbs, average, Whakaipo; Fuljames and party, 120 fish, 41bs, Whangamata; Mr. Smith and party, 100 fish, 41bs,
Rainbow Point; J. Tupara, 60 fish, 51bs, Whakaipo; Mr. Lavin, 3 fish, 4 Mile Bay; Mr. McArthur, 15 fish, 41bs, Motutere Bay. Tokaanu Area The season opened with a good number of anglers on the Tongariro. The weather conditions were very unpleasant for the opening but the rivers were in good order. Many large catches were reported and during- the first three days, limits were fairly numerous. During the first few days of the season trolling parties could not do much fishing owing .to the northerly winds putting up a rough sea on the lake. Since then, however, weather conditions have particularly imporved and both fly fisherman and trollers have reported good sport. The general condition of the fish taken in the rivers is very fair for this time of year although some have noit recovered from spawning. The heaviest fish reported from the Tongariro was taken in the Log Pool and weighed 91bs. .Motuopa Hay has again fished well ■during the opening fortnight and many good conditioned fish have been taken both 'on the fly and by trolling 1 parties.
