ROTORUA-TAUPO BETTER SPORT ENJOYED PARTICULARLY BY TROLLERS . 1 RECENT BAGS REPORTED ' . The following report upon fishing . conditions in the Rotorua and Taupo districts during the past fortnight has been releasea by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr A. Kean) : — "Fishing in- the Waikato River has been fair, and some good fish' have been taken. One one occasion, Mr. A. J. Nimmo and Mr. W. J. E. Owen took 10 fish in four hours' fishing one morning. The weights were lllbs., 81bs., 5flbs., 51bs., down to 3;lbs. The sarae anglers, on another occasion, took seven fish the largest weighing 9£lbs. . These were all taken on the Alexandria, smelt fly, and small brown nymph. "The Earl and C'ounte'ss Beatty took eight fish on the lower Waikato in one short day. The average wa's 3ilbs., and the largest 431bs. ^ "The fishing at Atiamuri is good. During the daytime • some excellent fish have been caught on the wet fly, and i$ the evening the rise to sedge and spinner ha's resulted in several good bags being taken. "On Lake Rotorua the fishing has fdefinitely improved. Some very good bags have been taken and really good conditioned fish amongst them. Trolling has been very successful. The launch "Symbol" records a catch of 75 fish. On another occasion the launch "Symbol" came in with two limits for two rods. The average was 31bs., and the heaviest fish was 51bs. All the above fish were caught by trolling. "Some very good fishing is to be | had at Hamurana in the evening, and the night fishing at Awahou is improving. Good fish are coming in to the mouth of the stream. Several fair bags of fish have been obtained at the Rotoiti end of the Ohau Channel, and on the northern side of Rotoiti. Mi\ Sanders is getting a fair supply of fish at the mouth of the Wai-iti on Rotoiti. Rotoma has fish-

ed well. "Fishing on the Green and Tarawera Lakes has not been good, but Okareka Lake has fished fairly well. One angler, Mr. Bates, obtained an 831b's. fish by trolling there. Olcaitaina is fishing well, and two fish of lOlbs. have been landed. Most suc- | ce'ssful flies in Rotorua district are the j hawk fly and yellow matuku. ! Rotorua Area Dr. and Mrs. Rogers, 96 fish, 3Jlbs. average, spoon and fly, Rotoma, one month; Mrs. Cowie and another, 44 fish, 31bs., spoon and fly, Rotoma, one week; Mr. Hanner Wright and another,' 24 fish, 3-*lbs., spoon and fly, Rotoma, li days; Messrs. Martin, Grocott, Clare, .Carter -18 fish, 31bs., Wet and dry fly, Atiamuri, one evening; Mr. Doran, 16 fish, 41bs., dry fly, Atiamuri, one evening and one day; Mr. Boucher, 12 fish, 31bs., spoon, Rotoma, one day; B. and J. Quinlan, 9fish, 3SIbs., 'spoon, Green Lake, one day; V. Goeghan, 8 fish, 211bs., spoon, Waikato, one day. Waikaremoana Area The Waikaremoana district has only been fair. The lake has been rough, and few fishermen out. The majo_rity of the fish taken have been in good condition, and averaged 2£lbs. Details of catches reported are: — J. Dowell and party (3), 40 'fish, 2|lbs. average, fly, Koro Kora, one week; J. Burke and party (3), 30 fi'sh, 2Jlbs., spoon, Panekiri, one day; Robt. Dunbar and party (4), 28 fish, spoon, Te Puna and Panekiri, one week-end; W. Cook and party (4), 21 fish, 2£lbs., spoon, Hoporuahine Lake, one weekend; Mr. Ball and party (4), 20 fish, 2£lbs., fly, Lake, one week-end. Bay of Plenty In the Bay of Plenty, the larger fish in the rivers are now beginning to rise, and some fair bags have been taken. The dry fly i's the most successful here, and fish up to 31bs. and 4lbs. were to be caught. Details of catches reported are: — Three rods, 10 fish, lllbs. average, wet fly, Waimana, one day; T. Frost, 3 fish, 21bs., Matuku, Waimana, one day; Mr. Watkins, 3 fi'sh, 31bs., dry fly, Waimana, half-day; Mrs. Watkins, two fish, 251bs., Matuku, Whakatane, half-day; W. Guthrie, 2 fish, 4ilbs., wet fly, Waioeka, one day. Taupo District "Fish are now arriving at the delta, and some fair fish have been taken. One angler took eight fish there, averaging 61bs., the heaviest being 91bs. These were all caught on the wet fly, Tamati. A percentage of anglers have secured good bags of fish at Motutere Point and in Stump .bay. Fish in the Western Bays are only in fair condition, but show a steady improvement over those taken last month. "Owing to weather conditions, including the low temperature of the water for the time of year, fishing has been fairly difficult, but noticeably improved with the rise in temperature during the last few days of the month. "A few fish have shown up in the Waitahanui, but it requires a larger run before the fishing can be classed as good. "The Tongariro River is not yet fishing well owing to the few fi'sh there. The older identities amongst the anglers predict the catching of fish with their weights well into double figures. They are basing their prediction on the condition of the fish already taken in the river. "Dyy fly fishing on the Waikato River in the vicinity of Pye's Camp has been good. when weather conditions were favourable. "A 10-pound fish wa's caught by P. H. Hawken on the wet fly in Lake Taupo, at Three Mile Bay." The following is a list of some of the catches: — P. H. Hawken, 40 fish, 4|lbs. average, 4ilbs., fly, 2, 3 4-Mile Bays, two weeks; S. Tinsley and party, 20 fish, 4Jlbs., minnow, Whangamata, one day; Party from Pye's, 7 fish, 421bs., fly, Whakaipo Bay, one day; B. U. Barlow, 25 fish, fly, Delta, four days; K. Chapple and H.
