ROTORUA - TAUPO SOME IMPROVEMENT IN LAKES DISTRICT REPORTED CONSERVATOR'S REPORT The following report upon fishing conditions during the past fortnight in the district under his control, has been issued by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean) : — Rotorua Area "Fishing in the lakes has been f air and some good bags of both; rainbow and brown trout have been taken. Rotorua", Hamurana and the Ohau Channel have fishedi very well, one fish of 141b's. 2ozs. being taken on the fly at Hamurana. "Oue limit bag of good fish was reported to have been taken from Tarawera Lake. , Rotoiti has been fairly hard, but a few fish have been- taken from the mouth of the Wai-iti Stream. "A few good fish are being taken from Lake Okataina. "The Ngongotaha stream is holding a fair head of good fish up to 51bs. in weight, and a large supply of young trout up to 10 inches in length. "Rotoma lake is still fishing fairly well with good eonditioned fish. "The report from the fishing lodge at Atiamuri is that the river in that vicinity is fishing very well. One angler, Mr. Williams, of Auckland, using a dry fly, (blaelc gnat), seeured in an hour's fishing in the evening a 71b., 51b., and 41b. . trout, and Mrs. Lee killed a 51b. and two 41b. trout. "Fishing below the Huka Falls on the Waikato Rover, and in the vicinity of Fuljames' Camp, some good fish are being seeured, particularly on the dry fly in the evenings. "The rivers in the Bay of Plenty are very low, but even 'so some very good fishing has been had on the dry 'fly." Details of catches reported are as follow: — Mr. Whyte, 12 fish, 21bs. average, Rotoma, matuku, 1 week; local angler, 11 fish, 51b., Hamurana, Dorothy and Ewe Wasp, 1 day; local angler, 5 fish, 41bs., Hamurana, Ewe Wasp, 1 day; Mr. Birch, 5 fish, 31hs., Rotoma, Matuku, 1 day; Mr. Currie, 4 fish, 3|lhs., Ngongotaha, ewe wasp, 3 hours; T. Rakau, 4 fish, 41bs., Wai-iti, small matuku, one evening; Mr. Gow, 4 fish, 21bs., Rotoma, matuku, one day; T. Frost, 6 fish, 2|lbs., Waimana, wet fly, one day; J. Eing, 4 fish, 2|lbs., Tarawera, wet fly, one day; J. Frost, 1 fish, 2!lbs., Waimana, dry fly, two hours; Mr. Smith, 1 fish, 2§lbs., Waimana, dry fly, two hours. "Rain is badly needed at the Tokaanu end of Lake Taupo to clear the rivers and bring the fish up. Several fish have been taken at the Delta whieh are nearly ready to spawn, arid as soon as a fresh is experienced in the rivers, there will be a great run of fish. The fish whieh have been taken in the Tongariro River are in good condition, and are from 51bs. to 71bs. in weight. "Trolling in the lake has also been liard owing to the long dry spell. The variation between the temperature of the water at the mouth of the rivers and lakes is not great enough to cause the fish to attempt to run. "Very few anglers are fishing in the district. Good fishing is to be had in the Waikato River from the Outlet to Huka Falls." Details of catches reported are as follow: — Mr. Stewart and party (two rods), 20 fish, 51bs. average, Whangamata Bay, spoon, one day; Dr. MacKay, 14 fish, 4ilb. average, Whangamata Bay, spoon, one day; Hawke's Bay party, (two rods), 11 fish, 4Jlbs., Whakaipo Bay, 'spoon, one day; Hon. Richard Greville, 9 fish, 411bs., Jerusalem Bay, fly, one day; Mr. and Master Mourin, 7 fish, 4*lbs., Waitahanui Bay, spoon, l day; Mr. Bagnell, 4 fish, 51bs., Vicinity Pines, spoon, two hours; B. U. Barlow and G. Small, 29 fish, 311bs., Delta, Tamati, two days; J. Wilson and Sealey, 16 fi'sh, 61bs., Delta, Tamati, one day; C. Roberts and F. Cunningham, 14 fish, 41bs., Delta, Tamati, one day; M. Hunter, 2 fish, 51bs., Hatepe Mouth, birch, one day; K. M. Slight, 2 fish, 51bs., Tongariro, dry fly, one day.
