ANGLING IN THE DISTRICT

ROTORUA AND TAUPO

CONSERVATOR'S REPORT DIFFICULT CONDITIONS FISHING VERY PATCHY The following repprt upon fishing in the Rotorua and Taupo areas during the past fortnight has been supplied by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr A. Kean) : — "Fishing in Rotorua is improving. but is still hard and not many heavy hags have been taken. Trolling parties are not getting the hags they expect for the time of the year. Rotoiti is fishing fairTy well and some good fish are being caught in Okataina and Tarawera lakes, while Rotoroa lake is fishing consistently well. It is not expected that the lake fishing will improve until there is a fairly heavy fall of rain and the lake levels rise. "The Bay of Plenty rivers are fishing well, particularly for the dry fly man. The best rise is from 9 a.m. to noon. A small dry fly, No. 12 or

14 hook, partriclge and gmger nacxies, and liare's ear body, is the' most successful. "In the Waikaremoana district, the fishing has been patchy. Some days ; good hags are taken and on others . hardly any fish are caught at alt. "The fishing at Atiamuri on thc Waikato is good. One lady angler, using a dry fly in the evening, landed four fish of an average weight of 51bs. • The fishing on the Waikato in the vicinity of Fuljames is good, fivc to seven fish per day being taken on both the wet and dry fly. "The most successful lake flies have been the hawk fly, ewe wasp, and turkey and red. "The following are some of the catches: — Mr Saxton and party (2 rods), 24 fish, 2£lbs average, in Rotoroa, fly and spoon; 2 days. Mr Lennard and party (2 rods), 12 fish, 21bs, Rotoma, fly and spoon, 1 day. Mr Frazer, 6 fish, 21bs, Rotoma, matuku, 1 day. Mr Brackett, 6 fish, 2\ days, Rotoma, fly and spoon, 1 day. A. Annan, 6 fish, 81bs, Waitete, matuku, 2 hours. Mr Turner, 6 fish, 2|lbs, Hamurana, ferris, 1 day. H. O'Callahan, 6 fish, 3 days, Ngongotaha, ewe wasp, 1 day. J. Local angler, 12 fish, 41bs, below Huka, black sedge, evening. Taupo Area. "There has been no run of fish into the rivers at the south end of Lake Taupo yet. The evidence is that the fish in the lake are ready to move as soon as a fresh is experienced in the rivers. One fish, a male, caught at the Delta was in a ripe condition. "The fishing in the Tongariro River is difficult. Some anglers are getting a few fish each day but only the most persistent fishermen are getting any numbers. There is a large quantity of smal'l fish up to 12 inches in length. One angler caught 16 fish, 8 inches to 13 inches in length, on a dry hy in 11 hours' fishing. This spealcs well for the future stock of fish for the district. "One fish of 131bs lOozs was taken above Major Jones Pool in the Tongariro. This was a brown trout. The fishing in the Delta has been patchy. On several occasions bags of six to 10 fish have been taken and then the next day the fishing has been completely off. "The mouth of the Tauranga-Taupo has fished fairly well during late hours from 9 to 11 p.m. Some good conditioned fish up to 81bs have been caught. "There are very few anglers at Taupo end of the lake and the fishing in that district has been difficult. Several fish are being caught on the lake with a dry fly, the best time being from 8.30 a.m. to noon. "The fishing on the Waikato Rivelin the vicinity of Pye's Camp is good. Six to seven fish are taken each evening on the black sedge, fished dry. The most successful flies for the lake and the Tongariro River have been the tamati, ewe wasp and yellow matuku. Tho following is a list of some of the catches: — Sir William Perry, 36 fish, 51bs average, Whakaipo and Whangamate, harling a large matilku, 3 days.
