, ROTORUA-TAUPO SOME IMPROVEMENT BUT STILL PATCHY CON SERVATOR'S REPORT Tho following report upon trout fishing conditions in the Rotorua and Taupo area during the past fortnight, has been supplied by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr A. Kean) : The following report upon . trout fishing conditions in the Rotorua and Taupo area during the past fortnight, has been supplied by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean): — tThe fishing in Rotorua has improved and some good bags have been taken. There is a big supply of fish in the Ohau Channel, and the fi'sh are in excellent condition. The fishing in Rotoiti in the vicinity of the Waiiti Stream is not as good as one would expect for the time of year. "Lake Okataina has fished exceptionally well, and good-conditioned fish have been taken up to lllbs. in weight. Lake Tarawera is now fishing exceptionally well, and fish up to 13ilbs. a're being taken. The fish are in prime condition, and are averaging llb. to l'ilbs. heavier than the fish taken last season. Particulars of the Okataina and Tarawera fish are given in the list of catches and they malce very interesting reading. "Rotoehu and Rotoma are also fishing well. The dry f ly fishing on the Waikato River near Fulljam.es' Camp has been good with fish up to 81bs. "The fishing in the Bay of Plenty has been only fair; few fisjiermen have been out, and -the fi'sh ar&- difficult to take. The rise to the lace fly is now over, and fish are feeding on the bottom. Details of catches reported are as follow: — Launch Mararoa 38 fish, Rotorua, trolling, 2 days; Mr. Boch and another, Mrs. Reynolds and anothei*, 16 fish, 31bs., Rotorua, trolling, 1 day; Mrs. Burningham and another 18 fish, 31bs., Rotoma, trolling, 1 day; Mr. Blair 11 fish, Te Wairoa, 1 day; Messrs. Gee, Best, Clare, Congreve, 9 fish, 8albs., Tarawera, 1 -day; Mr. Geater 6 fish, 81bs., Tarawera, 1 day; Messrs. Gomez and Gieson 33 fish, 2?ilbs., Rotoehu, fly, 2 days; Mr. de Castro, 8 fish, 71bs., Ohau, 1 day; Messi's. Powell and Coppard 20 fish, 421bs., Okaro, spoon, 1 day; IN'. G. Wood, 43 fish, 6Slbs., Okataina, trolling, 1 week; Messrs. Lennard and Saxton 12 fish, 71bs., Okataina, fly and spoon, 1 day; R. G-. Everett 4 fish, 7lbs., Okataina, fly and spoon, 2 hours; F. Ball 3 fish, Okataina, fly, 1 day. Taupo District • "The low water in the Tongariro River continue's to make fishing hard. In the pools of any depth a fair numbef of fish are lying, but will not "take.' There has been a definite improvement in the fishing during the past fortnight, but not as great as was expected after the recent rain. jaII the fish are in excellent condition and are in some instances, ready for spawning. "The report from the Taupo end of the lake is nbt very encouraging. Tfte fishing is hard and the lake level is low. A few g-ood fish have been taken from the Waitahanui, but they are not plentiful. _ Trolling parties have done well at times, but the fishing has been patchy. "Dry fly fishing above the Huka Falls in the vicinity of Pye's Camp has been good. "The general conditions in the whole of the Lake Taupo district are exceptional for the time of year, and until the rivers and lake ri?e considerably above their present level, good fishing cannot be expected.
