ANGLING IN DISTRICT
DIFFICULT PERIOD BROKEN WEATHER TOKAANC FISHES WELL LIST OF GOOD BAGS The following report upon the fishing in. the disttict during the last fortnight in Januapy- has been supplied by the ConservaTor of Fish and Game (Mr A. Kean) : — '• .Rotorua Area "During the period the weather Has been .most unsuitab.le for fishing, with heavy rain and strong winds. The temperatures of the lalces fell, and in consequence, the fish moved out from the mouths of the streams to deeper water, and were more difiicult to take. "The Hamurana side of the Rotorua lake at times fished fairly well, and on occasions some good fish were talcen round the edge of the lake on a dry fly. Rotoiti was most diffficult fishing. Rotoehu . improved, and some goocl eatches were reportI ed. Rotoma fished fairly well, with good-cond'itioned fish up to 3ilb. to 41b. The record of' fish taken by visitors to Atkinson's Lodge, Rotonia, for the fii'st three months of the season, total 51'9 fish'. Lake Okataina again fished as well as any of the lakes, and one angler, Mr. Samuels, on -two occasions took nine fish _ weighing up to 81b. "The Bay of Plenty again fished well, with excellent conditioned fish up to 51b. taken on the dry fly. Taupo Area "Up to January 24, excellent fishing Avas enjoyed both at the Delta and in the Tongariro. Fish were plentiful in both places, particularly at the Delta. All fish were in good condition, -and anglors were very pleased with the sport obtained. "The Tauranga-Taupo improved and competent anglers had good sport both at the mouth and upstream. Motutere, Jellicoe Point, and Hatepe were poor. Good fishing was had in the vicinity of the old Waihi Mill, and at the mouth of the Waihi Stream. Trolling ha's not been good, although some fair eatches were occasionally taken from F'tump Bay and along the Waihi east line.
"At the Taupo end of the lake, fishing has not been so good. The rivers have been discoloured, and the Waikato ha's been carrying a lot oi weed from the lake, which has made fishing difiicult. There is no shortage ' of fish in thevicinity of Pye's Camp on the Waikato River, and anglers are very pleased with the condition of the fisK taken."
