SOUTHLAND TEAM’S WIN
QUADRANGULAR FISHING
SHIELD
The Southland team won the quadrangular shield for a fishing competition between Gore, Mataura, Wyndham and Southland on Saturday, The contest was held on the Makarewa and Hedgehope rivers, three teams on the Hedgehope and one team on the Makarewa taking part. Conditions on the Makarewa were difficult. There was a north-west wind blowing downstream. The Hedgehope stream was in good order. The Southland team’s total was 42 fish and the weight was 431 b Boz. Detailed results were:—
Southland.—G. Hoffman (15 fish), 151 b; J. Louden (10 fish), 101 b; D. Wishart (10 fish), 121 b; G. Friend (8 fish), 71b 12oz. Total: 431 b Boz. Gore. —F. Hoffman (15 fish), 141 b; J. Ferris (12 fish), 111 b 4oz; W. Archer (10 fish), 81b; W. McKenzie (three fish), 3 lb. Total: 361 b 4oz. Wyndham.—E. Mitchell (11 fish), 121 b 8oz; A. J. Gregory (9 fish), 81b 4oz; S. Shanks (3 fish), 41b 12oz; R, Bayne (one fish), 1 lb loz. Total weight: 261 b 9oz.
Mataura. —C. McGowan (10 fish),
101 b; J. H. Anderson (9 fish), 81b 12oz; J. Adam (8 fish), 61b 8oz; J. Anderson (1 fish), lib. Total: 261 b 4oz. The cup for the heaviest bag was won by G. Hoffman, of the Southland team. Mr W. McKenzie, captain of the Gore team, presented the shield to Mr Hoffman, on behalf of the Southland team, at a social evening. A short toast-list was honoured. A sale of fish for the fund for the relief of distress in London will be held on December 1 at Invercargill.
