MEAT SHOPS IN LONDON.
FARMERS’ PORPOSALS In reference to a cable stating that Mr Massey condemned as impracticable a proposal to have retail shops in Great Britain for the disposal of New Zealand meat, Mr W. J. Polson (Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union), chairman of the executive committee to which the question of marketing meat was referred by the Farmers’ Conference, states that he was unaware of what information v.as sent to Mr Massey, but he wished it made clear that the scheme at present under consideration contemplated several alternative proposals. One was to open retail shops, but ?>u decision had been reached. A depot system of distribution from depots to ordinary retailers was favoured by some. Another proposal, which was strongly supported, is that the producers should link up with the Wholesale Co-operative Federation of New Zealand, now associated with the Australian and .South African Cooperative Federations, with an organisation in London. The federation v ould then be enabled to open depots, but the whole scheme would only be* developed if the farmers’ freezing companies became interested. In any case no definite action had yet been taken.
