A specimen of the New Zealand toad has been captured in the Karaka Creek. The Evening Star is in a position to state that the Ministry intend using every effort to induce H.R.H. Prince Alfred, “ The Duke of Dunedin” to visit Otago. Mr Joseph Tuckwell, formerly of the Detective Force in Otago, and latterly Governor of the gaol, Auckland, hasesisblislied a private inquiry office, in Melbourne. Mr Dod has driven 900 sheep from Napier by the Reinga —inland Wairoa road—to Poverty Bay, and cattle have been driven to the same place by the Mahia, or coast road.
A distinct shock of an earthquake, accompanied by a rushing sound, was felt and heard (says the Oamant Times), at about half-past one on Monday morning, the 23rd inst., in the immediate neighbourhood of Oamaru and Marewhenua.
