CRICKET MATCH AT TURAKINA.

A match between two elevens of the Rangitikei and Wanganui clubs came off on Wednesday, the 22nd, in Mr Lethbridge’s paddock, at Turakina, and resulted in a sweeping victory for the Rangitikei eleven in one innings with eight runs to spare. The playing of the Rangitikeis, was most commendable both in batting and fielding, but the Wanganuis played worse than they ever did before in a match. The ground came in for an inordinate amount of censure —it was certainly not the best, it was indeed much inferior to the cricket ground at Wanganui, but then this is a paddock, and a pretty paddock too ; and in some measure may be considered as equally bad for both, being neutral ground. The two batters for the Rangitikei side, who made the longest stand were Messrs Green and Draper, who continued to guard their wickets in an admirable manner. Green played carefully and well. Draper, after having suffered in the knuckles considerably, succumbed to the bowling of Mr Witchell for a score of 15, and was replaced by Carlyon who after making a few good runs gave place to another, and another, but still Green continued to hold his bat and add to the score, until eventually Mr Witchell found Green’s stumps and he retired for a score of 39. The other players did not long engage the attention of the Wanganui field, though still the number mounted up by runs and byes—byes making a conspicuous item in the Rangitikei score despite the back-stoppiug of Tomlinson. Wanganui sent in Messrs Farrah and Watt, both of whom after beginning the score were run out in succession by too eager a desire to make a stand against the imposing figures of Rangitikei. Neither Barnard nor Jenkins, two crack players, made any score, and afterwards Witchell, after making some pretty play in which he was well backed by Kirkpatrick and McDonough in succession, was given out by a bowl of leg ; the next at the wicket was Macdonald who went out with first bowl ; next Chalmers and afterwards Tomlinson, a few runs each and so on till the last two of the eleven were at the wicket with a small score to their credit. Chalmers was bowled out and left Hey wood to carry out his bat, after having had opportunity of only making a splendid drive for 3. The total score was 51. Wanganui were sent in again, Messrs Heywood and Farrah taking the bats. Throughout, the eleven made some better play than before as the score will show, but it was of no avail to redeem their losing game ; after a gallant but ineffectual stand, they were all out with 8 runs below the score in the first innings of their opponents. The following is the score :
