AUCKLAND.

November 8

The mail steamer Zealandia sailed for San Francisco this afternoon. Mr G. M. Keid was a passenger for England, on business connected with the East Coast Land Company.

The following gentlemen of the legal profession were passengers by the s.s. Wanaka for Wellington : — Judge Macdonald, Barstow, and Devore, as members of the Judicial Commission; Edwin Hesketh, to attend the sitting of the Court of Appeal ; also, Alexander, on behalf of the defendants in the case Whitaker v. Rich and another.

At the inquest on the remains of Capt. McKenzie, of the Rona, a verdict of found drowned was returned. The jury recommended the erection of a lighthouse at Kaipara Heads. The remains of Captain McKenzie were buried in the Presbyterian cenietary.

To-day was the opening day of the agricultural show. There was a large increase in the exhibits, ai.d the display of stock was excellent. The attendance was not very large, to-morrow being the day for the public generally.

November 9. The holiday to-day was strictly observed. The weather was splendid. The agricultural show was largely attended. Musket was awarded the champion cup of fifty guineas as the best blood entire. James Wallace was awarded the Loan and Mercantile Company's cup for the best sheep.

At the Devonport Regatta the cutter Imp, in the third-class sailing race, filled and went down. The crew of five were saved by the yacht Brothers.

At the Ponsonby fancy dress ball a leading ironmonger caused a groat sensation by appearing as Te Whiti. His get up was capital.

The Orange Lodge held a procession to-day, and marched to Reuiuera, where sports were engaged in.

Sir Georg-e Grey has arrived from Kawau. No political programme is settled yet.
