AUCKLAND, September 21. The racing season, 1907-8, opened at Auckland to-day, when the Avondale Jockey Club inaugurated their Spring Meeting. The weather was fine, and there was a capital attendance. £7927 10s. passed through the totalisator, as against £7966 on the first day last year, a ecrease of £38 10s. Results:—
Maildeni Plate.—Gay Paris 1, Octoroon 2, Castadrift 3. Scratched : Henry Havelock and Klond'yke. Won by half a length. Time, 1 mm. 21 sees. Dividends, £2 7s. and1 £3 2s. First Handicap Hurdles—Aqua Regia 1, Lady Hune 2, Sol 3. All started. Won easily by five lengths. Time, 3 mins. 57 sees. Dividend, £3 ss. Avondale Stakes.—Talepitcher 1, Sedition 2, Rai-ata 3. Scratched: Waimangu, Pyralis. and Coromiandel. Prior to the start Aqua Fortis jumped a fence, gobl owb of the course, and did not take part in the race. Hohungataihi led to the straight, wiiere the field closed up, and a great race ended in favour of Talepitcher by a head, with Rarata a head behind Sedition for third place. Time, 53 2-5 sees. Dividends, £5 16s. and £1 Is.
Avondale Cup.—Uranium 1, ScoLly 2. Shrapnel 3. Scratched: Haldane, Tui Cakobau. Uranium was in front all the wiay, and won by a neck from Scotty, who ran wide at the turn, Shrapnel a length away third. Tnglis was left at the post, and took no part in the race. Time, 2 mins. 15 2-5 sees. Dividends. £3 ss. and £1 13s. Plunket Handicap—Lochbuie 1, Pearlie 2. Omati 3. Scratched: Luresome and Cymri Won easily by two lengths. Time, 1 mm. 34 sees. Dividend, £5 9s. Steeplechase Handicap.—Nor'-west 1, Cinque 2, Lady Lanta 3. All started. Won by a length. Time, 6 mins. 27 sees. Dividends, £8 and £1 2s. Pony Handicap.—Waihou 1, Octoroon 2, Manapouri 3. Also started: Ngakapa. Won very easily by six lengths. Time, 1 mm. 20 eecs. Dividend, £3 &s. Flying Handicap.—Te Aroha 1, Millie 2, Omati 3. Scratched: Peregrine. Won 'by a neck. Time. 1 mm. 19 sees. Dividends. £3 11s. and £1 17s.
