Messrs. Harland and Wolff have con-' tracted for the construction of a White Star liner, 840 feet in length and of 40,000 tons displacement. The size of tins leviathan1 may be realised1 when one considers tliat the Lusitania is 50 feet shorter. The explanation of this multiplicity of 'huge boats is the great increase in the trans-Atlantic traffic. Not only is the immigrant, traffic very large, but every year more Americans flook to Europe, and in the season it is necessary to book berths in New York weeks ahead, in spite of the number of boats in the different services. "Thirty transAtlantio liners are engaged' in thirtysix different services from New York, and make every year 2100 trips to and fro/ says a New York correspondent. "If the entire Atlantic seaboard, including Canada, be added, the total is increased to 36 lines, 57 services, 3252 trips, and 300 steamers. Canada's entry into the ocean passenger traffic lias been attended with such, rapidl growth as to miike one of thfe Inost remarkable features of the movement. Nearly every company is adding to its fleet. While the ocean liners out of New York have carried eastward during the last six months 2700-more first-class cabin passengers" than last year, 9000 more sec-ond-class and1 31,000 more steerage passengers, the westward traffic promises to increase proportionately."
