The" Hartnett" Milkers at Dookie College. *+. _ Tbo Government Dairy Expert, Melbourne, Victoria, Mr. R. Crowe, has now ■ completed his calculations of returns from cows, both hand and ma■chine milked, at Dookie College, Victoria, for the year 1905-6. The report is a voluminous one, and has been forwarded to Mr. E. G. Duffus, Secretary i'oi1 the Council of Agricultural Education. Mr. Crowe has also kindly supplied Messrs. Holdenson and Neilson with a dopy, which can bs inspected at their office, 521, Flinders Street, Melbourne, by those interested. The gist of the report is that, in 1906, the cows milked by the "Hartnett" machines gave an average of 12.6 per cent, better jjiilk-yield, with 11.91 per cent, better butter-fat yield, than the -cows returned under hand milking. According to this, a cow giving a return •of £8 for 12 months' milk under Ijandmilking, would, when milked by the "Hartnett" milkers, return £9 10s., an extra profit of £1 10s. per cow, besides about 50 per cent, saving in working •expenses. This is solid proof of the great superiority of machine over hand milking, and shows the necessity for all ■up-to-date farmers who wish to make a success of dairying to lay aside the old methods and drudgery of hand milking, and go in for the more up-to-date methods of machine milking. Mr. Orowo concludes his report with the following: "As far'as the comparison between hand aiid ma-chine milking is -concerned, the result has come out in favour oF the machine Your obedient servant (Signed) Robert Crowe."
