The Stormbird arrived in port yesterday morniiiig. She brought a general cargo with her, and leaves this morning with a load of wool for Wellington. The Wellington agents of the ShawSavill Company have received advice to the effect that a new steamer is to be "built for the company by Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., of Belfast. The steamer is to be called the Tainui, and will be about 10,000 tons. She is to have a length of 477 ft. and a beam of 61ft. Her speed will be about 15 knots. She will be ready for sea in about ten months.

The number and net tonnage of British vessels respecting whose loss reports were received at the Board of . Trade during the month of October, 1907, and the number of lives lost are as follows: —Sailing vessels, number 51,' net tonnage 8168, lives lost 61; steamers, number 32, net tonnage 7720, lives lost 21; totals, number 83, net tonnage 15,888, lives lost 82. She will, therefore, be by far the largest ..-steamer that has eve.r yet ei'ossed the equator, this distinction attaching up to now to the Grrosser Kurfurst, of. 13,182 tons also of the N.D.L. The Prinz Fr<Kich Wilhelm is 613 ft. long, and can accommodate 425 first-class, 338 second, and 1556 steerage passengers. She was launched last month in -Germany.
