NOTES BY "MULTIFORM."

Business engagements precluded me from attending either the Maaawatu or Asliurst meetings, but a friend who attended both gatherings has kindly supplied iii 9 with the following notes, which may prove of interest:—

In tho run for tho Manawatu Cup, The. Lark was last to leave the barrier, and the ground to bo made up settled his chance. But on the third day, W. Price made no mistakes, and got'home by half a length from Maniapoto. Pantaloon made a better showing in the Kelvin Hack Hurdles than he^did on Saturday, as he won from end to end. Taura made a game effort under his big weight, but had to be content as runnier Tip. Gauze proved what a. good mare sho is by winning the Tararua Hack Welter in 1 mm. 29 2-5 sees.

The Rand is a big black colt (3 years) <by Gold Reef—Pearl Shot. I am of opinion that he would have won had young Rao been able to put a bit moro work on to him, and in, the straight the rider had the misfortune to lose his .whip. Sen Sim fairly romped home in the Tokomaru Hurdles, on the second day, with 11.7 on hie back.

Ballarat is evidently coming on fast, and should score shortly. Sho ran a good race on Boxing Day. Sister Anne got "a fly" on the field in tho Nursery Handicap. The start was one of the worst I have seen.

Dusky Morn is one of the b?st sprinters in the. Dominion, as ho was last to Jeavo the barrier in the Kawau Stakes (8.1), on the tihird1 day at Manawatu, and he won easily from Full Rate, in tho good1 time of 1 mm. 14 2-5 sees.

Frank Lind had' Xavier in good fettle at Ashurst. Jumping well, he wor. comifortably from Pardon. Wanganui-trained horses have had a good innings during the holidays, having won no less than 12 races, 'and six seconds, during the last four dayc. The Ashuret-Pohangina Racing Club had a glorioms diay for their annual meeting. This club deserves to prosper, as they are not afraid to put good stakes on their programme. There was a great crowd there.

Mr. _G. F. Moore was present to witness his dolours carried to the front on three occasions.

Signor was Last to get away at the start of the1 Hack Flying, "but G. Price brought' him round nicely, and getting up on the rails, won from' Little Mary in_ good time. Ikon was third. G. Price was again the winning jockey, as he rorle a waiting-race on Prize Bloom in the Guineas (by The Possible—Primula), and won easily from Ru (by Waiuku—Violet). Lam'aria, the Cup winner ran in the Hack Welter on the third day at- PaJmersotn, but could only get third to Moscow, who with 7.0 on'hef'back (Lowe) oame with a fast run, and beat Waipaku, who tried to win from end to end. Lomaria is by New Forest—Fadeleiw. Mystification^ got kicked at the post, 'He wlas putting in, a great run up tho straight, but 8.9 was too much. G. Price was again entrusted with the mount on Carissima in the Hack Welter, and, getting awoy nicely, won by half a length from King Poet. Oi).ly four started in th"e.''Poibangina Hurdles. DusW Morn and Lord Soult shob out of tho barrier.together. At the bend, Mr.. Moore's gelding assumed a half-length lead, and came in an easy first.

Conquer (by Conqueror—Blue and White) broke away four times in the Maiden Hack, but eventually Axito got a flying start and fairly flew in. Lady Disdain, who was put up for auction and passed in at £100, on tho first day at Palmerston, won the row race on the programme—the Dominion Handicap, of 200 soys.

The luck of racing is very uncertain, jand was evidenced during the holidays in the case of the Fisko mare Fi.sher;maid, who had recently changed hands, after being a rather disappointing runner of late1. The mare was recently leased to Mr1. F. C. Faber. and put into Frank Lind'e stable, and at tho first time of asking landed the double at Taranaki.

, The starting at Awapuni was, on the whole very eratic. but strange to state the_ majority of the finishes were most exciting and particularly dlose. The bookmaking fraternity appeared in fairly large force at Palmerston and Ashnrst.

.:: With regard to the Ashurst gathering it is really well ©enducted. and promisee; to excel very shortly some of its more pretentious rivals. It mieht be mentioned, though, that in tho last raco somo of the* more stringent regulations were "more honoured in the breach than the observance."
