The accident which occurred at Castlecliff on Sunday, and which nearly ended fatally, exemplifies once more the foolhardiness of crossing the bar. ; in an. oi,cm boat. .We have time and again drawn attention to the danger that attends this particular form of madness,and the deaths which wo have had to record have proved that the "warnings have not been un needed. So far as we know, the authorities have no power to prevent people putting to sea in small boats; the matter is left to the wisdom (save the mark) of the wouldbo seafarers. Thi3 is a matter; which requires the 'attention of our legislators, and the sooner, the trouble is grappled with the. better. There may bo no objection to people tempting Providenco so long as they do it at a time and place where they can. reap iheir reward unseen and unheard. But,unfortunately, that is not the case, as the venturesonieness of these people en-< dangers the lives of others who may. ba within sight and sound of ail,; Accident Had one of the rescuers on Sunday lost his life it would not. have been tho first time stich a thing had occurred.
