AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.

THE VICTORIAN DISSOLUTION

SURPRISE AT THE GOVERN-

MENT'S ACTION.

CHARACTERISTIC SPEECH BY

THE PREMIER.

(United Press Association.—-Copyright.) MELBOURNE, December- 7. The granting of a dissolution created a surprise.

Mr Murray declared that it was unprecedented. Such a course should only be taken when there was no chance of a. stable Government being formed. The Leader of the Labour Party said it seemed an exfcraoi'dinary procedure, giving Sir Thomas Bent two'chances. Sir Thomas Bent, in a speech at Bejidigo, sad it was true that he was defeated by his friends. Intriguing had been going on, but be was not going to take it lying down. Overtures had been made to him to go to the Labour Party, and carry the Land Valuation Bill, and break up his own party, but he replied, "Go to 'you know where.' " He was not very polished on such occasions. The proper thins; to do was to ask the people for a verdict.
