THE MISHAP TO THE ARAWA
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, December 7. The accident to the Arawa happened on November loth, when she was about a third of the distance from the Capo to Hobart. There was a high sea at the time. A thud was felt,, and, it. was found that the starboard propeller, weighing 11 tons, had dropped off. With tho other propeller she continued to raako over nine knots per hour, though tho fires were drawn from tho two boilers which had become useless. Most of tho passengers were unaware of the mishap for some time. An examination at Hobart showed that tho tail shaft had broken off just insido the stern tube. The vessel only left the builders in February last year, and the cause of the fracture is unknown. A new propeller will be mad© in Wellington and fitted here or in dock at Auckland.
