To the Editor.
Sir, —-When Parliament meets again_ the first sane member who has manhood. enough to move for the abolition of flogging as a legal punishment may be fairly sure of support from both sides, and getting his. measure through. The present system is a relic of lagdom and a disgrace to civilisation. Flogging is.entirely optional on the part of the judge, and to their credit be it said.. that very few of them seem to believe in it, and the few who, as Frank Morton puts it, "happen to be inclined'that, way," might remember Maxim Gorky'ssumming up of the matter, that "the greater a scoundrel a man is in private ">. life, the more severe he is as a judge. "~ And, by,the way, the said Frank Morton must be a humorist of a high order,, when after referring to the Te Oranga. Home outrage he -suggests "Mr Fowldsas Agent-General in preference to poor old Mr Hall-Jones, who has only boeiisent home to nurse the billet for our Joseph, who has seen the writing or*: the wall.—Yours r etc., .---:
